What if learning wasn't about memorizing facts, but about discovering what makes your heart beat a little faster?
SOULcial Studies is a homeschool class unlike any other—a sacred space where children explore the things that make their souls feel truly alive. Rooted in the Unschooling tradition, this class is less about curriculum and more about connection: connection to ourselves, to each other, and to the beautiful, complex world we share.
This isn't social studies with a typo. This is SOULcial studies—because we believe that what we learn should touch something deeper than our minds. It should reach our hearts.
A Circle of Stories, Questions, and Wonder
Each session, students will have the opportunity to share, present, or discuss anything they find important in the world: religion, culture, beliefs, questions, passions, exploring our individual and collective curiosities. We'll explore diverse perspectives with open hearts and curious minds, creating a brave community of young thinkers who feel empowered to reflect on their place in the world.
This is a space where:
Questions are celebrated
Different perspectives are honored
Vulnerability is met with kindness
Every voice matters
Our First Journey: Immigration—The Courage to Begin Again
We'll begin by exploring one of humanity's oldest stories: immigration. The stories of people who have left everything familiar behind, crossed borders (both literal and metaphorical), and rebuilt their lives with courage, resilience, and hope.
What we'll experience together:
A living story: Diana, a dear friend from Colombia, will share her personal immigration journey—the challenges, the beauty, the heartbreak, and the hope
Windows into other worlds: We'll explore beautiful children's literature about immigration from around the globe, opening our hearts to experiences that may be different from—or surprisingly similar to—our own
Conversations that matter: We'll create space for students to ask questions, share their own family stories, and explore what home, belonging, and identity mean to them
This is as ALWAYS a free class.
The only requirement is a blank page/no line journal and an open mind.
Journals will be provided to people who do not have one.
The Journal: Your Soul's Companion
Each child will keep a journal throughout the class—not as an assignment, but as a companion for their inner journey. This journal is theirs to fill however their soul needs to express itself:
✍️ Written reflections, stories, or letters
🎨 Drawings, paintings, or collages
🎵 Lists of meaningful songs that capture how they feel
📖 Poems, quotes, questions, or prayers
🌟 Anything that captures their thoughts, feelings, and wonderings
There are no "right" or "wrong" ways to journal. This is a space for authentic self-expression—messy, beautiful, and completely their own.
Our Philosophy: Learning That Touches the Soul
At Sonder Life, we believe in the concept of sonder—the profound realization that every person you pass has a life as vivid and complex as your own. SOULcial Studies brings this philosophy to life.
We honor:
Each child's unique voice and perspective
The beauty of diversity—in culture, belief, and experience
Deep thinking over quick answers
Connection over competition
Questions over conclusions
When children are given the freedom to explore what truly matters to them, they develop into thoughtful, compassionate, engaged human beings who know how to think and how to feel.
This class is for the dreamers, the questioners, the sensitive souls, the deep thinkers, and anyone who believes that education should nourish not just the mind, but the whole person.
Building Community Together
This isn't just a class—it's a community. A gathering of families who value connection, curiosity, and the courage to explore big questions together.
For parents: You're welcome to stay during class, and if you do, we invite you to participate fully as a lifelong learner alongside your child. Some of the most beautiful moments happen when adults and children learn side by side, discovering that we're all still growing, still questioning, still becoming.
Who This Class Is For:
All who are curious about the world and their place in it
Families who value emotional intelligence alongside academic learning
Young people who have big feelings and big questions
Anyone seeking a learning community that honors both individuality and connection
Children who learn best when they feel safe to be themselves
